My period was more than a week late by the time I left Mark’s according to my mental math. Suddenly, the box of crackers in the front seat of my car looked more like a ticking bomb as I drove the two hours home. I’d been nibbling on them every day for a month, promising myself again and again that I would schedule an appointment with my doctor to talk about seeing a stomach specialist. Now I was glancing at them every few miles, brimming with suspicion.

It shouldn’t be possible, though. I’d never had any issues with my prescription.

A million thoughts and fears raced through my mind, not least of which being… If I was pregnant, who was the father?

My hands were clammy and shaking by the time I reached my house, the one I shared with Adam. Adam, my husband, who wanted to be a father. Who might be about to get his wish.

But was this really the way he pictured it happening?

Leaving the box of crackers in my car like an exiled criminal, I dashed into the house and went straight to the medicine cabinet. I rifled through bottles until I found my package of birth control pills, flipping it over and reading it carefully. There were warnings against using it with certain other medications, but none that I was taking. At a loss, I set the pack down on the counter with a confused and exasperated huff.

My phone dinged, thrice.

I sighed, running my hand over my face before checking the message.

The first was from my mother-in-law, Lily.

Hey, sweetie! Your birthday is coming up and I wanted to know if you’d like to have a little get-together at our place? I’ll bake a cake! I wasn’t sure if your parents were going to do anything for you. You can invite them and some friends over if you’d like! Let me know!

I smiled at my phone, appreciative of how much like their own they treated me. Of course, my parents weren’t planning anything as far as I knew - they never did - and Lily knew that. She and Ray went out of their way every year to make sure I felt special anyway. I wasn’t about to waste that goodwill on inviting my parents, who probably wouldn’t come anyway, but would be sure to make it a miserable time if they did. Would it be entirely inappropriate to invite Mark, though?

The second was from Adam.

Hey, gorgeous! Hope the drive home was okay. Sorry I can’t be there, had to work. Did my mom text you about your birthday, too? She said you could invite some people. Was just checking to see if you were planning to invite Mark. Could you ask him to bring that good bourbon with him? Love you!

A chuckle echoed off the tiled walls. Adam was a mind-reader - and an avid lover of fine whiskey. I shot him a text back, telling him I’d gotten home with no issues and that I would make sure to ask.
